Caligo Chaser
New Side-Scrolling Action RPG by Com2uS

This week, I had an opportunity to participate in the beta testing of an upcoming action RPG by Com2uS. While not particularly groundbreaking, Caligo Chaser is an ambitious title with excellent role-playing features and tactical melee combat. It gives you the best of what's available in an RPG game like Inotia 2 and quality gameplay similar to Gamevil's Hybrid: Eternal Whisper. If you are in the market for a more action-based role playing game, Caligo Chaser should be at the top of your list of purchases when it hits the App Store.

First impressions of the beta version are pretty good. Having recently played Inotia 2, I was glad to see the game start out with a better storyline. That said, I wouldn't recommend the game based on its storyline alone but it's got entertainment value and it fits the linear construct of the game. In CC, you play a young private knight trying to solve cases to pay off a huge debt and improve as a warrior. Through various quests, you'll travel to different battle areas across three extensive regions around the town of Emporion.

If you've played Hybrid or Blade Master by Minor Axis, Caligo Chaser will seem quite familiar. It captures the essence of what people loved about those games particularly the side-scrolling battles. What sets it apart, however, is the RPG gameplay with functionality that rivals the depth of Inotia 2. It includes an item-combining feature, lots of quests, and an exhaustive list of collectible items. You can level up quickly, earning ability points to customize your character's abilities. It's also possible to enchant active and passive skills that you acquire as well as strengthen equipped items...all at a small cost of course.

Regardless of skill, any moderately experienced gamer can play Caligo Chaser successfully with proper character management. It's not particularly difficult to survive even against high-level monsters although fighting is not merely resigned to button mashing either. The real challenge and motivation to play (or replay) battle stages is to improve on overall style points and earn additional reward items after each battle. Grading is based on a multiple factors of elapsed time, combination totals, and the diversity of attacking points. This is all very similar to what you find in Hybrid: Eternal Whisper and it's one of the features that made it great.

Graphically, the game is a little redundant with its anime style but still better than many games that have come before it. The controls may still need some tweaking to become really good but I think it's far better than Blade Master and certainly spot-on with Hybrid. Menus also seem a bit small and tedious to use (in beta test version) and will hopefully be improved in the final released version.

Caligo Chaser offers depth, variety, and a great gameplay experience that will easily appeal to action gamers and RPG enthusiasts. The intuitive and organized layout simplifies the gameplay, giving it great pick-up-and-play value and perhaps making it more accessible to the casual gamer audience too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the game priced similar to Inotia 2 and its depth of gameplay would certainly justify the cost. There's a possibility of future in-app purchases that will either extend the game or simply give you an opportunity to buy game items. In its current form, Caligo Chaser is a culmination of similar RPG and action games already in the App Store but packaged into a nicely executed game.

Be sure to also check out Com2Us's other titles, Homerun 3D Battle and the awesome Sniper Vs Sniper.
